John Daley (1868 – 1935) was the superintendent of the Home from 1913 – 1928. Born and raised in Syracuse, New York, he completed his apprenticeship and worked most of his career on Syracuse newspapers. He also served as president of the Syracuse Typographical Union for several terms, and as an organizer and representative of the International Typographical Union, of which he was a member from 1889 until his death. He married Marie Riley in 1896, and they had a daughter together named Cecilia, born 1899.
During Daley’s tenure as superintendent of the Home, he oversaw quite a bit of expansion to the property – namely most of the significant extensions to the Castle building (in 1914, 1916, 1923, and 1928 especially). Following their retirement from the Home, the Daleys moved to Los Angeles to be closer to Cecilia and her family, and Mr. Daley entered an investment business with their son-in-law, Harry Moffett. After Marie Daley’s death in 1931, John took her ashes back to Syracuse, where he lived out his last few years and died in 1935.
